What Does Basement Storage Actually Do to Photographs?
The damage mechanism is worth understanding because it affects how you should prepare photos for scanning.
Humidity is the primary enemy. Photographic prints consist of a gelatin emulsion layer bonded to a paper or plastic base. When relative humidity rises above 65%, the gelatin begins to absorb moisture and soften. When it drops below 30%, the emulsion desiccates and may crack. Temperature amplifies the humidity problem. Warm, humid air holds more moisture. When a basement heats in summer, already-humid air accelerates chemical degradation reactions in color dyes. Biological growth moves in when conditions are right. Mold spores are present in all indoor environments; they activate when relative humidity exceeds about 70% and nutrients are available. Left untreated, it etches through the emulsion chemically, eventually leaving holes in the image.
Album interaction creates its own problems. Many photo albums from the 1970s and 1980s used magnetic pages β polyvinyl chloride sheets coated with pressure-sensitive adhesive. In humid storage, this adhesive migrates onto print surfaces, causing discoloration and occasionally bonding prints to plastic so firmly that separation peels the emulsion.
How to Assess What You Have Before Scanning
Before spending time scanning dozens of prints, a quick triage helps you set realistic expectations for each photograph.
Category 1 β Surface damage only. The image is clearly visible across its full extent. Damage is brown spots, fading, mild foxing, or surface haze. These respond extremely well to AI restoration. Before any scanning, wear cotton or nitrile gloves. Skin oils on aged photographic surfaces cause new spotting that is chemically identical to the humidity damage you are trying to fix. Place photos on a clean, lint-free surface β a sheet of white cotton rag paper works well.
Address separation first
If prints are stuck together, do not pull them apart dry. Place the stack between clean, slightly damp blotter paper and let it sit for 30-60 minutes. The moisture relaxes the adhesive or gelatin bond enough to allow careful separation. Work at one corner with a soft, thin tool β a silicone palette knife works better than a metal implement. If prints refuse to separate, scan them as-is and note which areas may have image from two overlapping prints.
Clean only the surface

Do not attempt chemical cleaning of mold spots, sticker residue, or embedded dirt β you risk removing emulsion along with the contaminant.
Handle warped prints carefully
Curled or wavy prints should not be forced flat under a scanner lid. If the curl is moderate, try the 48-hour blotter method: place the print between sheets of clean cotton rag paper, then under a flat weight (a heavy book on a clean surface), and leave for two days. Many humidity-warped prints will relax enough to scan flat. Scan at the right resolution
1200 DPI is the minimum for standard 4x6 prints with moderate damage. For small-format prints (wallet size, half-frame) or prints with severe fine-crack damage, scan at 2400 DPI. The higher the input resolution, the more data the AI restoration has available to make reconstruction decisions. Save scans as uncompressed TIFF files β JPEG compression introduces artifacts that the AI may amplify rather than correct.
