What aspect ratio is my photo?

Divide the width and height by their greatest common divisor. A 4000 × 3000 px photo is 4:3; a 6000 × 4000 px photo is 3:2 (standard for most cameras). Phone photos are often 4:3, and many prints are 3:2.

Why does my photo get cropped when I print it?

Because the print size has different proportions than your photo. A 3:2 photo printed at 8×10 (a 4:5 ratio) must crop about 20% to fill the frame. Pick a print size closer to your photo's ratio, or add a matte to keep the whole image.

What print size matches a 3:2 photo?

4×6 is exactly 3:2, so a standard camera photo fills it with no cropping. 8×12, 12×18, and 16×24 are also 3:2. Sizes like 5×7 and 8×10 have different ratios and will crop.

Why prints get cropped

Every photo has an aspect ratio — the proportion of width to height. Most cameras shoot 3:2, phones often shoot 4:3, and standard frames come in their own ratios (4×6 is 3:2, 8×10 is 4:5, 5×7 is 5:7). When the photo's ratio doesn't match the frame's, something has to give: either part of the image is cropped to fill the frame, or you add a matte/border to keep the whole picture.
