Multiply the width by the height in pixels and divide by one million. A 4000 × 3000 px photo is 12 megapixels (4000 × 3000 = 12,000,000 = 12 MP).

How many megapixels do I need?

6-12 MP prints well up to 8 × 10 inches and covers most needs. 20 MP and up allows large prints and heavy cropping. Under 2 MP is best for web or small prints — AI upscaling can enlarge it if you need bigger.

What megapixels actually mean

A megapixel is one million pixels. Multiply a photo's width by its height in pixels and divide by a million and you have its megapixel count. More megapixels means more detail to print large or crop into — but only real detail counts. Enlarging a low-megapixel photo the ordinary way just stretches it blurry.
