JPEG compression trades a little detail for a much smaller file. At around 70-80% quality most photos look identical to the original while weighing half as much or less — ideal for email, websites, and sharing. Push the quality too low and you start to see artifacts: blocky squares and halos around edges where the compression discarded real detail.

Always compress from your highest-quality original, and keep that original safe. Compressing an already-compressed photo compounds the damage.
