Civil War era photographs β taken between roughly 1855 and 1870 β represent some of the most historically significant and most technically fragile images in American family archives. They predate the standard photographic formats most people are familiar with. Understanding what format you have, how to scan it safely, and what AI restoration can realistically achieve is essential before you begin.
What Formats Did Civil War Era Photographers Use?
Daguerreotypes (1839β1860s)
The daguerreotype is a direct-positive image on a polished silver-coated copper plate. The image layer is mercury-silver amalgam β extraordinarily fine-grained, capable of resolving tiny button details and hair strands. It is also fragile: the surface cannot be touched, is damaged by moisture and skin oils, and is extremely sensitive to atmospheric tarnish.
Civil War daguerreotypes are typically found in hinged cases β a velvet-lined clamshell of leather, thermoplastic, or papier-mache. Many are the sixth-plate size (roughly 2.75 x 3.25 inches). The image has a characteristic mirror-like quality and will reverse tonally when viewed from different angles.
Scanning approach: Photograph under diffuse, angled lighting to minimize reflection rather than using a flatbed scanner directly. The case should be opened only by someone experienced with the hinge mechanism, which can be brittle.
Tintypes (Ferrotypes, 1856β1900s)
Tintypes are direct-positive images on thin iron sheets coated with black or dark brown japanned lacquer and a collodion emulsion. They are more durable than daguerreotypes, much cheaper to produce, and extremely common β soldiers had them made in camp for a few cents to send home. A typical Civil War tintype is one-sixth plate or smaller, often loose or in a paper folder rather than a case.
Tintypes survive well by comparison, but the iron core rusts, the lacquer cracks, and the emulsion can flake. The image quality is lower than daguerreotype β grainier, with softer face detail.
Scanning approach: Flatbed scanner at 1200β2400 DPI. The dark background of the tintype base can fool auto-exposure; use manual exposure or adjust levels after scanning.
Albumen Prints (1850sβ1890s)
Albumen prints β made from egg-white-coated paper sensitized with silver nitrate β are the most common Civil War photographic format. Carte-de-visite (CDV) and cabinet card portraits of soldiers, family members, and officers are almost always albumen prints. The surface has a slight sheen, and aged albumen prints typically show characteristic yellow-brown overall tone and foxing (rust-brown spots from iron impurities in the paper).
Scanning approach: Flatbed at 1200β2400 DPI depending on format size. Scan in color mode even though the image appears monochrome β AI tools use color channel information for better reconstruction.

How Should You Scan a Civil War Photograph?
Daguerreotypes
Daguerreotypes cannot safely be laid on a flatbed scanner without risk of surface contact damage. The preferred approach is a copy stand setup with two diffuse light sources angled at 45 degrees to minimize reflection. Use a digital camera with a macro lens. Shoot RAW if possible. Multiple exposures at slightly different angles can be composited to reduce reflective hotspots.

Tintypes and Albumen Prints
A quality flatbed scanner (Epson Perfection V600 or equivalent) at 2400 DPI handles both formats well. Use the transparency adapter for very small formats. Scan in 48-bit color, save as TIFF. Do not use the scanner's automatic corrections β scan flat and let the AI restoration handle tonal work.
