Someone in your family did this with good intentions. Sometime between the 1970s and the 1990s, a well-meaning relative took a favorite photo β a wedding portrait, a child's school picture, a grandparent's only surviving snapshot β to a copy shop or used a home laminating machine, and sealed it in plastic "to protect it forever." Three or four decades later, that photo is often in worse shape than ones that were never touched: yellowed, hazy, sometimes bubbling at the edges, occasionally fused so tightly to the plastic that the image and the laminate have become one object.
This is one of the most common preventable-damage patterns in family photo collections, and it is different from ordinary aging. A photo that just sat in a box fades slowly and evenly. A laminated photo degrades because of an active chemical reaction between the plastic and the image underneath β which means the fix requires understanding what that reaction actually is before you decide whether to touch the original at all.

Why Laminated Photos Turn Yellow and Hazy
Most consumer and low-cost commercial lamination made before the 2000s used polyvinyl chloride (PVC) film. PVC is not chemically stable over multi-decade timescales β it slowly breaks down and releases hydrochloric acid gas, a process conservators call off-gassing. That acid does two things: it clouds and yellows the plastic itself, and it reacts with the silver and dye compounds in the photograph underneath, accelerating their degradation well beyond what the same photo would experience unlaminated.
UV exposure makes this dramatically worse. A laminated photo displayed in a frame near a window can show visible yellowing within 10-15 years, versus 40-50 years for an unlaminated print stored in the dark. The plastic doesn't block UV the way people assume β in many cases it traps the photo in direct contact with a degrading acidic film, which is a worse environment than no protection at all.
The Three Failure Patterns
Yellowing and haze. The most common outcome β a uniform amber-to-brown cast over the whole image, sometimes with visible plastic clouding you can see even without the photo behind it.
Bubbling and delamination. Trapped moisture or air pockets that formed during application, or plastic that has started separating from the surface unevenly. This often traps mold spores in the gap, which shows up as small dark spots.
Fusion. The most severe case β the adhesive layer has chemically bonded with the photo's emulsion to the point where plastic and image are effectively one layer. This is common with heat-sealed lamination applied with too much heat, or older pressure-sensitive laminate left in warm storage (attics, garages) for decades.
Should You Try to Remove the Lamination?
This is the decision that determines everything else, and it depends entirely on which of the three patterns above you're dealing with.
If the lamination is flat, fully bonded, and stable (yellowed but not actively bubbling or peeling), removal carries real risk with limited upside. The safer path is to leave the original as-is, scan or photograph it carefully, and correct the image digitally. You preserve the physical object exactly as it currently exists rather than gambling on a delamination attempt.
If the lamination is already lifting at a corner or edge on its own, a careful, slow approach has a better chance of success, because the bond has already partially failed. The commonly used technique is the freezer method: seal the photo in a plastic bag to keep out moisture, place it in a freezer for several hours, and while still cold, attempt to lift the lifted corner slowly. Cold makes many adhesives more brittle and less likely to pull emulsion with them. Stop immediately if you feel resistance or see the image surface starting to lift with the plastic β at that point you are past the point where DIY removal is safe.
If the lamination is bubbling badly, trapping visible mold, or the photo is clearly deteriorating faster than it was a year ago, this has moved from "cosmetic problem" to "active loss in progress," and it's worth a conversation with a paper conservator before more image is lost β particularly for irreplaceable photos.
Physical Handling and Digital Restoration After Physical Intervention
This is the core trade-off with laminated photos, and it's worth being direct about it: physical delamination is the only way to fully remove the plastic and the trapped acid causing ongoing damage, but it is also the step most likely to permanently destroy the image if it goes wrong on badly bonded material. Digital restoration cannot physically separate plastic from emulsion β no AI tool touches the object itself.
What digital restoration does well is give you a usable, corrected version of the image without requiring that physical gamble at all. You photograph or scan the photo exactly as it currently exists β laminated, yellowed, hazy β and AI correction addresses the color cast and contrast loss the same way it would for a faded, unlaminated print. Scanning or Photographing a Laminated Photo
Avoid direct flash. Flash photography straight into laminate produces a hard reflection that obscures the center of the image. Use diffuse, indirect light β natural window light (not direct sun) or a softbox if you have one.
Angle the capture slightly. Photographing at a very slight angle (5-10 degrees off perpendicular) rather than dead-on often moves the worst of the glare out of frame, at the cost of minor perspective distortion that's easy to correct afterward.
Use a flatbed scanner if the sheet is flat. A flatbed scanner's diffuse light source produces far less glare than a camera flash. If the lamination has bubbled and isn't flat against the glass, this won't work well β camera capture is the fallback.
Scan at high resolution. 600 DPI minimum, since you may be cropping out reflection artifacts afterward and want detail to spare.
Digital Correction Workflow

Preventing Further Damage to the Original
Whether or not you attempt removal, three things slow the ongoing chemical reaction:
- Get it out of light and heat. UV and warm temperatures both accelerate PVC off-gassing. A dark drawer at room temperature is far better than a frame near a window or storage in an attic or garage.
- Do not re-laminate. If the photo is already showing acid damage, sealing it in fresh plastic traps the reaction rather than stopping it.
- Store loose, not stacked tightly against other photos. Off-gassing PVC can transfer some damage to adjacent items in an album or box.
