
How to Restore Photos from Old Memory Cards: What to Do After Recovery

Why Do Old Digital Camera Photos Look So Bad?

Camera manufacturers set JPEG compression ratios high enough to fit more photos per card. The result is visible block artifacts in smooth regions and color smearing around high-contrast edges.
Poor high-ISO performance. In low-light conditions, early camera sensors required high ISO settings that produced severe noise. The noise reduction in these cameras was either absent or produced smearing artifacts. Photos from indoor events β birthday parties, family gatherings, any situation requiring flash or high ISO β from this era show grain levels that make fine detail difficult to read.
The Two-Step Process: Recovery First, Then Restoration
It is important to separate data recovery from image quality restoration. These are different operations.
Data recovery means getting the image files off the card when the card is not readable by normal means. Consumer tools like Recuva (Windows) or PhotoRec (cross-platform, open source) scan the raw sectors of a card and reconstruct image files even when the file system is corrupted. For cards that appear blank or show a "please format this card" message, data recovery software is the right first step.
For physically damaged cards β cracked, bent, or exposed to water or heat β consumer software cannot help. File opens but appears entirely wrong colors. Some raw format files from old cameras β camera-specific raw formats like .crw (Canon), .nef (Nikon), or .orf (Olympus) β may not be correctly decoded by consumer data recovery software. Try opening them in a dedicated raw converter (Adobe DNG Converter, LibRaw, or darktable) before concluding the file is unrecoverable.

Export at highest quality from any editing you do first. If you crop, color-correct, or otherwise edit a recovered photo in any editing software, export at maximum JPEG quality (95 or higher) or as a TIFF before uploading to an AI restoration tool.
