Low-light photos fail in two different ways, and the fix for each is different. Understanding which problem you have β or whether you have both β is the most important step before reaching for any editing tool. Applying the wrong fix first can make the other problem worse.
What Are the Two Separate Problems in Low-Light Photos?
Problem 1: Noise and Grain
When your camera shoots in low light, it raises its ISO sensitivity to compensate for the lack of photons hitting the sensor. ISO amplification is like turning up the volume on a recording: you get more signal, but you also get more of the background hiss. In digital photography, that hiss is sensor noise β the random variation in pixel readings that produces the speckled, gritty texture you see in dark photos, especially in shadow areas.

How Do You Diagnose Which Problem You Have?
Zoom into your photo at 100% magnification β full pixel view, not a thumbnail β and look at a hard edge in the scene. The edge of a window frame, a building silhouette, a person's shoulder against a background.
If the edge is sharp but surrounded by texture or color speckle: noise without significant blur. Apply denoising.
If the edge itself looks smeared, trailed, or doubled: motion blur, with or without noise. Apply deblurring.

How Does Underexposure Make Noise Worse?
This is one of the counterintuitive realities of digital photography: dark photos often have more visible noise than photos shot at the same ISO but correctly exposed, even after you brighten them in post-processing.

The pixels in deep shadow regions of an underexposed photo are recording very little light β they are near the noise floor of the sensor, where the random signal variation is large relative to the actual image content. What Is the Step-by-Step Fix for a Dark, Grainy Low-Light Photo?

What Are the Realistic Limits of AI for Low-Light Photos?
AI enhancement is not magic, and being honest about the limits saves frustration.
What AI does well: Removing ISO noise from photos where the subject is visible but textured with grain. Recovering sharpness from mild camera shake. Lifting underexposed shadows that contain real (if dim) detail. Removing JPEG compression artifacts that accumulated on top of noise.
