Open any shoebox of old family photographs from the 1960s through the 1980s and you will find the same thing: prints that were once vivid with color have shifted toward a warm orange-brown wash. Skin tones that should be pink look orange. Clothing that was blue looks grey-green. Backgrounds that were white or light grey now look the color of weak tea. The photographs are not ruined β the image is still there β but the color has drifted so far from the original that it no longer looks like a true record of how things actually looked.

Why Do Old Photographs Turn Yellow and Brown?
Understanding why photographs yellow helps set realistic expectations for what restoration can achieve.
Color photographs from the 1960s through 1980s were made using chromogenic (dye-based) photographic processes β Kodachrome, Ektacolor, Fujicolor, and similar products. These processes create the color image using three separate dye layers: cyan, magenta, and yellow. The three layers overlap to produce the full color range visible in the finished print.
The problem is that these three dye layers fade at different rates. The cyan dye is the least stable and fades fastest. Magenta fades at an intermediate rate. The yellow dye is the most stable and persists longest. As the cyan and magenta layers fade relative to yellow, the color balance of the entire print shifts toward the warm end of the spectrum. The blues in a sky fade first; the green foliage loses its cool cast; skin tones shift from natural pink-beige toward orange. This process accelerates with exposure to light, heat, and humidity β the three conditions that describe most attic storage environments.
Black-and-white photographs yellow through a different mechanism. The primary culprit is residual fixer β the sodium thiosulfate solution used in film and print development to stop the light sensitivity of unexposed silver halides. If not fully washed out after development (a step that was frequently abbreviated, especially in home darkrooms and amateur processing labs), the fixer reacts slowly with atmospheric sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide to form silver sulfide and silver oxide β both of which are yellowish-brown compounds that progressively stain the paper.
Acidic storage materials accelerate both processes significantly. Cardboard boxes, non-archival photo albums with paper sleeves, and even newspaper placed against photographs all off-gas acidic compounds that attack both the dye layers and the paper base itself.
What Does AI Color Correction Actually Do to a Yellow Photo?

How Should You Scan a Yellowed Photograph for the Best Correction Results?
The scan is the foundation of the restoration. A well-made scan of a yellowed photograph gives the AI tool the maximum information to work with. A poorly made scan limits what any tool can recover.
Turn off automatic color correction in your scanner software. This is the most common mistake people make when scanning old photographs. Epson Scan, Canon My Image Garden, and most other scanner software packages apply some form of automatic color correction by default. When you scan a yellowed photograph with automatic correction enabled, the scanner software interprets the yellow cast as part of the image and may attempt to "correct" it in ways that actually make the subsequent AI restoration harder. Scan in manual mode, set color adjustment to none, and save the raw file as TIFF.
Scan at 600 DPI for prints up to 5x7 inches. For larger prints (8x10 or bigger), 400 DPI produces a sufficient file for AI restoration and subsequent printing at the original size. Scanning at higher DPI than necessary creates very large files without proportionally better restoration results β the limiting factor is the detail present in the original print, not the scan resolution.
Clean the scanner glass before every session. Dust and lint on the scanner glass creates dark spots and streaks in the scan that AI tools interpret as damage. A microfiber cloth and a small amount of lens cleaner produces a glass surface clean enough for photographic work.
Scan with the lid closed for flat prints. If the print is curled or buckled from storage, flatten it gently under a heavy book for several hours before scanning. A curved print produces uneven focus across the scan β the center may be sharp while the edges blur.
What Results Can You Realistically Expect?
The range of AI color correction results depends heavily on how far the dye layers have faded and whether the underlying image structure is still intact.
Light to moderate yellowing (a warm cast, slightly muted colors, but recognizable tones) consistently produces excellent results. The color correction is accurate, skin tones return to natural warmth, and the restored print looks like a well-preserved original.
Heavy yellowing with significant dye loss (the image is nearly monochrome with a deep orange-brown cast, fine details are obscured) produces good but more approximate results. The AI can correct the color shift, but if the cyan and magenta dyes have degraded to the point where they contain almost no information, the "corrected" colors are inferences rather than recoveries. The result is usually still dramatically better than the yellowed original but should not be treated as a precise record of the original colors.
Brown staining from foxing or fixer residue is a separate problem from uniform yellowing and is addressed by the denoising models rather than color correction. Foxing spots and fixer stains are localized and irregular, so the AI must both remove them and reconstruct what was underneath. This typically works well for light to moderate staining and is less reliable for large, dense stain areas.
How Do You Fix Yellow Photos Without AI? (And Why AI Is Usually Better)
Before AI tools, the standard approach to fixing yellowed photographs was manual color correction in Photoshop or similar software. The process involves several steps: scanning, applying curves adjustments to neutralize the color cast, dodging and burning localized areas, and removing foxing spots with the clone stamp tool. A skilled retoucher can produce excellent results this way.
The practical disadvantage is time. Manual correction of a single heavily yellowed photograph takes one to three hours depending on the damage level and the skill of the retoucher. For a box of 50 or 100 family photographs, manual correction becomes a multi-day project.

TIFF is preferred for archival storage (lossless, preserves all pixel data); high-quality JPEG (95 percent quality or higher) is acceptable if storage space is a concern. Keep both the original unmodified scan and the restored version as separate files.
Store in multiple locations. A single copy on a hard drive is not a backup. Copy restored photographs to an external drive and a cloud storage service such as Google Photos, iCloud, or Amazon Photos.
Print on archival paper with pigment-based inks. The single most important choice in printing is pigment inks versus dye inks. Dye-based inkjet prints can yellow and fade within ten to twenty years. Pigment-based prints on archival paper are rated at a century or more of stable color under normal display conditions. When ordering prints at a consumer lab, specify archival paper if available, or use a service like Mpix or Bay Photo that specifies pigment printing as standard.
Store physical prints in archival sleeves. Polyethylene or polypropylene photo sleeves (not PVC, which off-gasses acid) in an acid-free box at room temperature and moderate humidity prevent the chemical degradation that yellowed the originals.
