Directory photo quality is not a subjective judgment. There are measurable standards a photo either meets or does not.
Resolution at print size. A 2x3-inch portrait in a printed directory requires at least 300 DPI at final size, which means 600x900 pixels minimum. Phone photos sent via text message are often compressed below this. The photo enhancer uses Real-ESRGAN upscaling to recover resolution and detail even from compressed images.
Face sharpness in the eye region. The viewer's eye goes immediately to the eyes of any portrait. A respectful, specific follow-up message β "We need a photo where your face is clearly visible and in sharp focus; here are some tips for taking one" β is more productive than spending an hour on a photo that cannot be fixed.
What Is the Enhancement Workflow for Problem Photos?
For Tier 2 photos, the recommended sequence depends on the dominant problem:
For blurry portraits: Start with the photo deblurrer. This applies NAFNet deblurring tuned for portrait frequency ranges. Then run through the photo enhancer if additional sharpness and color correction is needed.
For heavily compressed images from email or text: Start with the JPEG artifact remover. Removing the compression blocking before any sharpening step prevents the sharpening from amplifying the block edges. Then apply photo deblurrer if additional sharpness is needed.
For grainy or noisy photos (low light situations): Use the photo denoiser first to clean the grain, then optionally the photo enhancer for final sharpness and color.
