Few photography questions generate more confusion than "how do I fix the blurry background in my photo?" The answer depends entirely on why the background is blurry — and in many cases, the right answer is: don't fix it.

Is Your Background Blur Actually a Problem?
The first question to ask is not "how do I fix this?" but "should I fix this?"
Background blur falls into two distinct categories with opposite implications:
Intentional bokeh is the soft, creamy background blur achieved by shooting at wide apertures (f/1.4, f/1.8, f/2.8) with a long focal length. The subject is sharp at the focus plane; everything behind it dissolves into smooth circles. This is a creative technique widely considered desirable in portrait, wedding, and product photography. Fixing it would degrade the image, not improve it.
Accidental camera-shake or focus blur occurs when either the camera moved during exposure or the camera's autofocus system locked onto the wrong plane. This can make both subject and background look soft, or create uneven softness across the frame that reads as a technical failure rather than a creative choice.
The diagnostic test is simple: look at your subject. If the subject is sharp — crisp eyelashes, readable text, clean product edges — but the background is soft, your background blur is almost certainly intentional or at least technically correct. The camera did exactly what it was told. Leave the background alone.
How to Tell If the Blur Is Actually Camera Shake?
Camera shake has a distinctive visual signature. Look for these signs:
- Directional streaking: Shake blur creates soft trails in a consistent direction across the entire image — usually a slight diagonal or horizontal smear. Both the subject and background show the same directional softness.
- Double edges: At high magnification, camera-shake images often show faint duplicate edges where the image shifted mid-exposure.
- Uniform degradation: Unlike bokeh (which renders backgrounds smooth and circular), shake blur makes both near and far elements look equally degraded.
- Loss of micro-contrast: Fine detail like hair, fabric texture, and tree bark loses its crispness even at center-frame where bokeh would not reach.
If you see any of these patterns, the blur is accidental and worth correcting. If the subject is sharp and only the background dissolves, you are looking at correct bokeh — leave it.
When Does Fixing Background Blur Actually Make Sense?
There are clear, practical scenarios where background deblurring is the right call:
Landscape and travel photography: Landscapes are supposed to be sharp from foreground to infinity. A slightly soft mountain range or building facade in the background of a landscape shot almost always signals camera shake from handheld shooting in low light. Architecture and real estate photos: Architectural images depend on sharp edges and readable textures throughout the entire frame — including walls, floors, and details in the distance. Product photography: Any blur in a product photo — foreground, midground, or background — undermines the image's commercial effectiveness. Products need to read as crisp and detailed.
